Geological Profile
- Mineral: Labradorite — a calcium-rich plagioclase feldspar [(Ca,Na)(Al,Si)₄O₈] in the anorthite-albite solid solution series, typically Ab₅₀An₅₀ to Ab₃₀An₇₀ in composition.
- Crystal System: Triclinic; forms in tabular crystals and massive aggregates within mafic igneous rocks (basalt, gabbro, anorthosite) and high-grade metamorphic terranes.
- Labradorescence: The stone’s signature iridescence results from thin-film optical interference within the Bøggild intergrowth — alternating nanoscale lamellae of calcium-rich and sodium-rich feldspar (100–300 nm thick) that reflect and refract light at specific wavelengths. At this scale, the polished face intercepts a greater volume of the intergrowth structure, producing broader, more saturated color fields than smaller pieces — often revealing secondary colors (violet, copper) not visible in smaller specimens.

Historical & Cultural Significance
Labradorite was first documented by Western science in 1770 when Moravian missionaries in Labrador, Canada, were shown the stone by the Inuit, who had long revered it. In Inuit cosmology, the Aurora Borealis was once imprisoned within the coastal rocks of Labrador; a warrior struck the cliffs with his spear to release the light into the sky, but some remained trapped within the stone — visible today as labradorescence. At this specimen scale, the stone’s aurora-like color fields make the legend viscerally legible. Finnish spectrolite — the full-spectrum variety discovered during WWII fortification construction in Ylämaa — is considered the pinnacle of labradorite quality and commands significant collector value. In Norse and Celtic shamanic traditions, labradorite was associated with the veil between worlds, used by seers as a stone of vision, transformation, and navigation through liminal states.
