What Is Moldavite? — The Science

Moldavite is a tektite — a natural silica glass formed by the Nordlinger Ries meteorite impact approximately 14.7 million years ago in southern Germany. The impact melted terrestrial rock and ejected it into the upper atmosphere, where aerodynamic forces shaped individual pieces as they cooled — producing a wide variety of forms including flat discs, elongated wands, irregular nodules, and full-bodied three-dimensional pieces. The thickness and mass of a Moldavite piece is determined by the volume of molten glass in that particular droplet during atmospheric flight. Full-bodied, thick pieces represent a larger original melt volume and are generally less common than thin, flat pieces. Moldavite is found only in the Czech Republic and is one of the rarest gemstones in the world by geographic restriction. Its forest green color comes from iron oxide; its wrinkled surface from rapid cooling.
