The Science: What Moldavite Actually Is

Moldavite is a natural impact glass (tektite) formed approximately 14.8 million years ago during the Nördlingen meteorite impact in present-day Bavaria, Germany. The impact released energy equivalent to billions of atomic bombs, vaporizing both the impactor and the surrounding terrestrial rock. The resulting silica-rich melt was ejected across Central Europe at hypersonic velocity, cooling in flight into aerodynamically shaped glass droplets.

Chemically, Moldavite is a silica glass (SiO₂ ~80%) with aluminum oxide (Al₂O₃), iron oxide (FeO), and trace elements derived from both the meteorite and the target rock. Its forest-green color is produced by iron content. It has a Mohs hardness of 5.5–7 and an amorphous (non-crystalline) structure — technically a mineraloid, not a mineral.
