What Is Moldavite? — The Science

Moldavite is a tektite — a natural silica glass (SiO2 + Al2O3 + oxides) formed when a hypervelocity meteorite impact melted terrestrial rock and ejected it into the atmosphere. The Nordlinger Ries impact event (~14.7 million years ago, Miocene epoch) created the entire global supply of Moldavite, scattered across Bohemia, Moravia, and Lusatia in the Czech Republic. It is found nowhere else on Earth.
