What Is Moldavite? — The Science

Moldavite is a tektite — a natural glass formed by hypervelocity meteorite impact. The Nordlinger Ries impact (~14.7 million years ago) melted terrestrial rock and ejected it into the upper atmosphere, where it cooled into glass before falling back to Earth across Bohemia and Moravia. Moldavite is found only in the Czech Republic, making it one of the rarest gemstones by geographic restriction. Its forest green color comes from iron oxide, and its wrinkled, sculptured surface texture is produced by rapid cooling during atmospheric flight. Genuine Moldavite supplies are finite and diminishing as Czech deposits are depleted.
