What Is Moldavite? — The Science

Moldavite is a tektite — a natural silica glass (SiO2 + Al2O3 + oxides) formed by the Nordlinger Ries meteorite impact approximately 14.7 million years ago in what is now southern Germany. The impact melted terrestrial rock and ejected it into the upper atmosphere, where it cooled into glass and rained back down across Bohemia, Moravia, and Lusatia in the Czech Republic — the only place on Earth where Moldavite is found. Its forest green color comes from iron oxide content; its characteristic wrinkled, sculptured surface from rapid cooling during atmospheric flight. The finite Czech deposits are diminishing with each passing decade, making genuine Moldavite increasingly rare.
