What Is Moldavite? — The Science

Moldavite is a tektite — a natural silica glass formed by hypervelocity meteorite impact. The Nordlinger Ries impact (~14.7 million years ago) melted terrestrial rock and ejected it into the upper atmosphere at extreme velocity. As the molten glass traveled through the atmosphere, aerodynamic forces shaped individual pieces into distinct forms — spheres, discs, teardrops, and elongated wands — before they cooled and fell back to Earth across Bohemia and Moravia. The wand form is produced when a molten droplet is stretched by aerodynamic drag during flight, creating the characteristic long, narrow shape. Moldavite is found only in the Czech Republic and is one of the rarest gemstones in the world. Its forest green color comes from iron oxide content; its wrinkled surface texture from rapid cooling.
