Constellation Lyra: The Astronomy

Lyra is a small but prominent northern constellation, best known as the home of Vega — the fifth-brightest star in the night sky and the second-brightest in the northern celestial hemisphere. Vega served as the North Star approximately 12,000 years ago due to Earth's axial precession, and will serve as the North Star again in approximately 14,000 years. It is one of the three stars of the Summer Triangle, the dominant asterism of the northern summer sky.

In Greek mythology, Lyra represents the lyre of Orpheus — the musician whose playing was so beautiful it could move rocks, calm rivers, and charm the gods of the underworld. After Orpheus's death, Zeus placed his lyre among the stars as a tribute to the power of music and love.

Faceting Moldavite requires cutting and polishing the natural glass to reveal its internal translucency and maximize light refraction through the green glass.

Faceted Moldavite is rarer in jewelry than raw Moldavite because the cutting process requires material of sufficient clarity and size — and because the natural sculptured surface of raw Moldavite is itself considered desirable by collectors.
